KOONS, Jeff

Balloon Dog (Blue)

Stock Code

2002
£15,000

Inspired by Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement, Koons elevates simplistic, everyday objects into provocative works of art. This porcelain sculpture is a continuation of Jeff Koons's famous 'Celebrations' series which the artist first began working on in 1993 and completed in 2000. The series consisted of monumental hyper-polished sculptures of nostalgic items such as balloon animals, party hats and Play-Doh. Now a symbol of pop culture itself, the 'Balloon Dog' in fact marries the traditional process of fine porcelain production with new, never before applied technologies to achieve the dog's iconic hyper-polished metallic-like surface. The idea of reflection has always underpinned Koons's endeavors, fascinated with the way light hits inflatable surfaces his porcelain sculptures create the illusion that they are lighter than they are.
