‘Let the work speak for itself’
Anthony Caro was a British abstract sculptor known for creating bold constructions from welded and painted steel. Often combining industrial and found metal pieces, he build large-scale works that did not represent recognisable objects. Instead of depicting figures or scenes, his sculptures focused purely on shape, space, and structure, raising important questions about what sculpture could be. By placing his works directly on the ground rather than on traditional plinths, he changed how audiences experienced them, creating more intimate interactions.
Caro has had major retrospectives and solo exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Hayward Gallery, London (1969), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1995), the National Gallery, London (1998), the Tate Britain, London (2005) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2011). His work is held in renowned collections such as the Tate Britain, London; the British Museum, London; the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
