Banksy
'Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable'
Banksy is a renowned, pseudonymous street artist, political activist, and filmmaker based in England, with his true identity still unknown and widely speculated upon. Active since the 1990s, Banksy is famous for his satirical street art and provocative epigrams, blending dark humour with graffiti in his signature stencilling style. His art often delivers sharp political and social commentary, appearing on streets, walls, and bridges worldwide. Emerging from the Bristol underground scene, Banksy's early work involved collaborations with other artists and musicians, shaping his distinctive style and message.

Banksy is an anonymous British graffiti artist known for his guerrilla graffiti works. Using public and urban spaces as his canvas, his work is known for its sharp wit and stencilled works. Blending humour and irony with powerful social commentary, Banksy’s work frequently questions systems of power, consumer culture, and political control. Through his work, the artist challenges viewers to reconsider authority, inequality, and modern society.
Due to the guerrilla nature of his work, it is rare to find large-scale exhibitions of his pieces. A major retrospective of Banksy’s work was held at Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art in 2023 featuring many pieces from his 25-year career. He was also featured at the Bristol Museum in his supposed hometown with over a hundred works in 2009. The Art of Banksy—a show featuring 150 works by the artist—was also viewable in various venues across London in 2024.
