The works are Calder’s take on futurism, with large strokes of red white and black occupying the sheet. The titles of these works, which translate to Steel of the Constructor and Again of Steel highlight Calder’s fascination with construction and engineering, having begun his career as a mechanical engineer. -

The 1972 Munich Olympics became a cultural milestone that reflected post-war optimism through innovative art and design. The Organising Committee were determined to redefine Germany’s global image in the aftermath of World War II, publishing this eclectic collection of avant-garde prints, many of which emphasised non-representational works.

The medal table is complete; congratulations to Léon Marchand for coming top and a huge round of applause to TEAM GB for securing so many medals. Paris 2024 has been marked by record-breaking achievements as well as many significant moments: from the opening ceremony, to the introduction of breakdancing, to the creation of this year’s Olympic posters. Of course the most well-known posters were those produced for the 1972 Munich Games, the full collection of first editions of which you can see here at our gallery on Maddox Street.

The Munich Games were not only a turning point in West Germany’s global status, but the first time the Olympics were promoted through artists’ limited edition prints.

In 1950s New York, before the Pop Art soup cans and Marilyns, Andy Warhol was already a well-regarded commercial artist. In an act of self-promotion to win new clients, Warhol created seven handmade books showcasing his early commercial blotted line illustrations.

Black Rhinoceros is part of Andy Warhol’s influential 1983 Endangered Species series. Following an impassioned conversation with his New York art dealers, Freyda and Ronald Feldman, Warhol produced this series of ten silkscreens to communicate the urgency of the wildlife conservation crisis occurring during the 1980s.
