The Summer Show features examples from two highly sought-after series by the 20th-century Spanish Master, Joan Miró. Expressing the playful and vibrant quality of Miró's work, ‘Ubu aux Baléares’, a series of 23 lithographs created in 1971, uses minimal detail and shape in a delicate balance of color and line. Ubu is the central character in Alfred Jarry’s play ‘Ubu Roi’, a comedy saturated with obscenity and unruliness first performed in 1896. Miró highlights Ubu’s vulgarity and farcical qualities in his use of bold lines and primary colours that carry childlike qualities.

Published in 1961, Joan Miró’s suite ‘Album 19’ is a celebration of the themes attributed to the earlier ‘organic-abstract’ movement of the 1930s, in which Miró played a leading role in its establishment, along with his fellow Surrealists. Miró’s work is in many ways outwith traditional artistic styles; he mastered the artistic rules established by his own imagination. Although these works from ‘Album 19’ appear to be non-figurative, viewers can find similarities between the mysterious forms and animals or objects, some shapes do possess anthropomorphic qualities.

‘A form gives me an idea, this idea evokes another form, and everything culminates in figures, animals, and things I had no way of foreseeing in advance’
