The Art of a Portrait

With Frieze Masters 2026 in full swing, we are looking at two of the finest works from our collection: Andy Warhol's Ingrid Bergman With Hat (1983) and Grace Kelly (1984). These works not only represent the height of Warhol's genius for portraiture, but also the close ties he had with the glittering stars of the golden age of Hollywood.

Andy Warhol Ingrid Bergman Shapero Rare Books

The first of the masterworks Shapero Modern will be displaying at Frieze Masters 2026 is Ingrid Bergman With a Hat, from a series of three screenprints depicting the Academy Award-winning actress. In keeping with his tradition of capturing glittering stars in their finest moments, Warhol takes a still image from a timeless masterpiece of classic Hollywood cinema: Casablanca (1942). Bergman famously played Ilsa Lund, winning the adoration of American audiences that would follow her through the rest of her career.

Warhol, wanting to capture both the iconic romantic character and the glamorous actress herself, paints Bergman in stunning colour. The clean composition of the subject's longing gaze is both intimate and monumental — a striking feat of Warhol's Pop Art portraits. It stands as a superb record of Bergman, who had died just a year earlier.

Andy Warhol Grace Kelly Shapero Modern

Andy Warhol, Grace Kelly, screenprint in colours, 1984.

Shapero Modern currently boasts another American beauty, Grace Kelly. Again, Warhol takes a still from a scene in one of the star's films: her debut role in Fourteen Hours (1951). Completed just two years after Kelly's tragic death, Warhol captures the star at a  moment in time, as an emerging star, freshly arrived in the glamour of American cinema, before going on to be Hitchcock's muse, a royal princess, and an enduring symbol of elegance.

Whereas Bergman gazes off in the direction of Humphrey Bogart, Kelly looks up to the viewer. The face is tightly cropped within the frame, so that her dazzling features may take up the entire viewing sphere. Warhol's multicoloured lines trace the bold features of the well-known face against the bright yellow and blue palette -- the most famous of all the Grace Kelly colourways.

These particular pieces, produced a few years before Warhol's death in 1987, represent a lifetime of superb innovation and cultural influence that led up to the moment of their creation.
