‘Night Scene’ is one of six intaglio prints Roy Lichtenstein produced in 1980, during the same period as his ‘American Indian Theme’ series. This piece was hand drawn onto a copperplate by the artist using etching, aquatint, soft-ground and engraving. Within the ‘American Indian Theme’ series, Lichtenstein combined one of his previously explored subjects – the American Indian – together with surrealist overtones, as seen in the present work. A broad variety of influencing source materials can be identified in this series, such as totems, textiles, beadwork, quiltwork, ceramics and baskets.
