Frank Stella
What you see is what you see. But, after all, the aim of art is to create space - space that is not compromised by decoration or illustration, space within which the subjects of painting can live.
Frank Stella (1936-2024) was an American artist renowned for pioneering Minimalism and creating the influential 'Black Paintings' in the late 1950s. His work, available for sale at our gallery, challenged traditional notions of art and space, redefining what was possible in the medium. Stella standed as one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, and his original artworks and signed prints are coveted by collectors worldwide.

Send me more information on Frank Stella
Born in Malden, Massachusetts, Frank Stella (1936 – 2024) attended High School at Phillips Academy, Andover, where he was intuitively drawn to Abstract Modernism. He continued his education at Princeton, majoring in History while immersing himself in the arts, moving to New York after finishing his degree in 1958, and embarking on a career that would see him become a central figure in the art world.
Stella’s career ascended rapidly in the early 1960s with his inclusion in major exhibitions. His participation in the Shaped Canvas and Systemic Painting exhibitions at the Solomon R, Guggenheim Museum in 1965 and 1966, marked significant milestones. In 1970, the Museum of Modern Art in New York held a retrospective entitled Frank Stella, making him the youngest artist to receive such an honour. Stella's innovative approach extended to printmaking, with significant contributions to modern print, recasting it from a mode of reproduction to a major artistic medium in its own right.
Solo exhibitions of Stella’s work have been held worldwide, including at prominent locations such as the Phillips Collection, Washington D.C.; the Baltimore Museum of Art; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He continues to exhibit internationally, with his work being featured at the Royal Academy, London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, amongst others.
Frank Stella's artworks are collected internationally, with notable holdings at the Menil Collection, Houston; the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; and the National Gallery of Art, London.
