Picasso takes an abstract approach to 17th-century European portraiture style, with subtle references to his literary and artistic heroes throughout the series. Rembrandt, Goya, Shakespeare, and Balzac can all be identified, among many other prominent historical figures, with distinct traits and characteristics. Created late in his life, these portraits reveal the amalgamation of a lifetime of inspirations.

The series also reflects the vivid colours and vibrant spirit of the South of France, where Picasso was living at the time. The series blends his iconic abstract and cubist style, remaining true to his characteristic visual language, while introducing whimsical and fantastical inventions of portraiture.
