Andy Warhol’s mother, Julia Warhola was an artist in her own right and provided the calligraphy to hundreds of her son’s album covers, advertisements and book illustrations. In Holy Cats, however, she takes centre stage, providing not only her delicate penmanship but also her charming drawings of cats and angels. Warhola was born in a Ruthenian village at the end of the 19th century and it is clear her style was influenced by the traditional folk art she grew up with.
