Andy Warhol
96.52 x 96.52 cm
This screenprint is based on a painting by the German artist Johann Tischbein. It depicts Goethe, a key figure in German literature as a traveller in a landscape of ruins. Warhol has cropped the original composition so as to create a head and shoulders portrait of the writer. Goethe had contemplated painting as an early career choice and published a book on the theory of colour.
Screenprint in colours, 1982, from the set of four, on Lenox Museum Board, signed in pencil, number 85 from the edition of 100 (there were also 22 artist's proofs), with the artist's copyright stamp in red on the reverse, published by Schellmann & Klüser, Munich and Denise René and Hans Mayer, Düsseldorf, printed by Rupert Jansen Smith, New York, with his blindstamp at the lower right, printed to the edges of the full sheet as published
