Francesco Clemente

Francesco Clemente is an Italian artist and a principal figure of the Transavanguardia movement. Characterised by esoteric philosophy and dramatic human psychology, the artist’s work takes on a neo-expressionist style in various mediums including drawing, painting and sculpture. Based at different times in cities around the world, Clemente’s work is laden with symbols from various cultures and spiritualties. Some of his work has been influenced by Indian culture and he has collaborated with Indian artisans in the past. 

Key retrospectives have been held for Clemente at major international institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1999), the Centre Pompidou (1994) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1990). He has also exhibited at venues such as MASS MoCA, Massachusetts (2015), the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Germany (2011) and the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina (MADRE), Naples (2009).
