Contemporary Art

Contemporary Art is the art of the present.  Produced by living artists in the late 20th century to the current day, Contemporary Art provides an opportunity to reflect on today’s social issues relevant to humanity, and the world around us.

Contemporary Artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and advanced technological world. Contemporary Art is a dynamic combination of materials, concepts, methods, and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy understanding or definition.

Eclectic and wide-ranging, Contemporary Art is distinguished by the basic lack of a uniform ideological principle. It is a cultural dialogue that concerns contextual frameworks such as personal or cultural identity, social problems, and issues, community and nationality.

Shapero Modern holds a varied collection of Contemporary prints and works on paper, including the Turner Prize winning Martin Creed’s Work No 3370. Following a simple geometric design, this screenprint exemplifies Creed’s typically constrained methodology, making it a perfect piece to add to any collection.

Nina Chanel Abney is known for her bold use of colours to represent a more violent everyday consciousness that people of colour endure due to acts of racial abuse. This is exhibited in her suite of five relief prints Temporary Friends, currently in Shapero Modern’s collection.

As an activist, Ai Weiwei calls attention to human rights violations on an epic scale; as an artist, he expands the definition of art to include new forms of social engagement. Shapero Modern stocks his entire Paper cut Portfolio as a collection or as individual prints. Ai Weiwei reflects on his life and work through the Chinese art of papercutting in this limited-edition portfolio. Meticulously cut in large-format, coloured fine-art paper, each of the eight pieces represents a decisive moment within Ai Weiwei’s oeuvre - from his time in New York in the 1980s, his exploration of Chinese crafts in Beijing in the 1990s, to the political activism of his recent work - offering a beautiful, personal retrospective in a unique format.
