STELLA, Frank

Les Indes Galantes I

Stock Code

1973
£7,250

The prints of Les Indes Galantes, are derived from the Mitered Mazes of the Concentric Squares and Mitered Mazes paintings of 1096-64. Although Les Indes Galantes is superficially similar to Jasper's dilemma, distinct differences exist in its smaller scaled configurations, tighter handling of the lithograph crayon, and fewer colour and value graduations. Les Indes Galantes uses only the primary and secondary colours and five shades of grey.

The iconography of Les Indes Galantes refers to an opera-ballet composed by the seventeenth-century French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau.

The five acts of Rameau's Les Indes Galantes are transposed into five lithographs of Stella's series.
